വീണ്ടും ഒരു ഈസ്റര്‍ ഞായറാഴ്ച. ഇതുപോലെ അമ്പതു ഈസ്റര്‍ ദിനങ്ങള്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞു പോയി. ഏതൊക്കെ പാപങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്നും ഞാന്‍ മുക്തി നേടി എന്നതാണ് ഞാന്‍ എന്നോടുതന്നെ ചോദിക്കുന്ന ചെറിയ ചോദ്യം. ഈശ്വര വിശ്വാസം ഒരു ശ്വാസം മുട്ടലിന്റെ അവസ്ഥയോ അഥവാ യഥാര്‍ത്ഥ സ്വാതന്ത്രത്തിന്റെ അവസ്ഥയോ. ക്രിസ്ത്യാനി ആയതിനാല്‍ ഇതൊന്നും എനിക്ക് ചെയ്യാന്‍ പാടില്ല എന്ന് വീരപ് മുട്ടി നടക്കുന്നവര്‍ ഒരു വശത്ത്. ക്രിസ്ത്യാനി ആയതിനാല്‍, ഇതൊന്നും ജീവിതത്തിനു നല്ലതല്ല എന്ന തിരിച്ചറിവ് ലഭിച്ചവര്‍ മറുവശത്ത്. ദൈവമേ രണ്ടാമത്തെ ഗണത്തില്‍ എന്നെ ഉള്പെടുതണമേ. അവ എന്നെ സ്വതന്ത്രന്‍ ആക്കുമെന്ന് എനിക്ക് ഉറപ്പുണ്ട്. ഈ തിരിച്ചറിവ് എന്റെ ആഘോഷങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് ചുക്കാന്‍ പിടിക്കട്ടെ. വെറുതെ കുറെ തിന്നു കുടിച്ചു കൂത്താടാതെ, ആഘോഷങ്ങള്‍ക്കും ഒരു ദിവ്യത കൈ വരട്ടെ. അത് എന്നെ ആനന്ദത്തിന്റെ പാരമ്യതയില്‍ എത്തിക്കട്ടെ. ആ ആനന്ദത്തില്‍, എന്റെ ജീവിതത്തിനു ഒരു നവ ജീവന്‍ വെക്കട്ടെ. ലഹരി ചോര്‍ന് തലവേദനയും, പരസ്പര വിദ്വേഷവും, അഹം ഭാവവും, പൊങ്ങച്ചവും, പരദൂഷണവും, കോലാഹലവും നിറഞ്ഞ സദസ്സുകളെ അവഗണിച്ചു, അങ്ങയുടെ ലഹരിയാല്‍ അടുത്ത ഈസ്റര്‍ വരെ ഞാന്‍ മനുഷ്യര്‍ക് ഉപകാരപ്രദം ആയ രീതിയില്‍ ആഘോഷങ്ങള്‍ തുടരട്ടെ. അന്യരെ സ്നേഹിക്കുക , ശത്രുവിന് ഉപകാരം ചെയ്യുക എന്നീ വിപ്ലവകരമായ ആശയങ്ങള്‍ പ്രാവര്‍ത്തികമാക്കി എന്റെ ജീവിതം സഫലം ആയി ആഘോഷിക്കുവാനുള്ള വരം ഈ ഈസ്റെര്‍ ദിനത്തില്‍ ഞാന്‍ യാചിക്കുന്നു. എനിക്ക് അത് മാത്രം മതി, ബാകി ഒന്നിനും എനിക്ക് ശാശ്വത സന്തോഷം തരാന്‍ സാധിക്കുകയില്ല. ദൈവമേ ഈ ഉയിര്‍പ് ഞായറില്‍, എന്നില്‍ ആവസിച്ചു, ശരി ആയ ഒരു ക്രിസ്തു അനുയായി ആയി, ശിഷ്ട ജീവിതം അടിച്ചു പൊളിക്കാന്‍ വേണ്ട കൃപ നല്‍കേണമേ. ആമേന്‍.

ദൈവമേ എന്നെ ഒരു പഴയ മനുഷ്യന്‍ ആക്കി തീര്കണമേ. പുതിയ മനുഷ്യന്റെ ജീവിത വെപ്രാളങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്നും അകന്നു നിന്ന്, ഒരു എളിയ മനുഷ്യനായി, എളിമയിലും, സ്നേഹത്തിലും, വിനയത്തിലും ജീവിക്കുവാന്‍ വേണ്ട കൃപ അങ്ങ് നല്‍കേണമേ. പ്രകൃതിയെ വികൃതം ആക്കാതെ, പ്രകൃതിയെ സ്നേഹത്തോടെ നട്ടുപിടിപ്പിക്കുവാന്‍ വേണ്ട വെളിവ് ഞങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് നല്‍കേണമേ. ധന, അധികാര മോഹങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്ന് ഞങ്ങളെ അകറ്റി, ഉള്ളതുകൊണ്ട് തൃപ്തിപ്പെട്ടു ജീവിക്കുവാന്‍ വേണ്ട ബുദ്ധി നല്‍കേണമേ, അല്ലെങ്ങില്‍ ഞങ്ങള്‍ ജീവിക്കാന്‍ മറന്നു പോയേക്കാം. അങ്ങേക്ക് ഇഷ്ടമല്ലാത്ത ഒന്നും ചെയ്യാന്‍ ഇട വരുത്തരുതേ, കാരണം, അങ്ങ് എന്നില്‍ ഇല്ലെങ്കില്‍, സാത്താന്‍ എന്നെ വീഴ്ത്തും എന്ന കാര്യത്തില്‍ ഉറപ്പു. ആയതിനാല്‍ എന്നെ എല്ലായ്പോഴും പൈശാശിക ശക്തികളില്‍ നിന്നും സംരക്ഷിക്കനമേ.

ഒന്നിനും സമയം ഇല്ലാത്ത ഈ കാലത്ത്, അനാവശ്യം ആയ സമയം കൊല്ലികളില്‍ നിന്നും എന്നെ വിടുവിക്കനമേ. എന്റെ എല്ലാ മിനിട്ടും, എന്റെ സുഖത്തിനല്ലാതെ, അങ്ങയുടെ കാരുണ്യത്താല്‍, മറ്റുള്ളവരുടെ നന്മക്കായി ഉപയോഗിക്കാന്‍ വേണ്ട വരം നല്‍കേണമേ. ദൈവമേ, എന്നെ കൈ വിടരുതേ. എന്നെ, തിരക്ക് കുറഞ്ഞ, പ്രാര്‍ത്ഥിക്കാനും, സ്നേഹിക്കാനും, ജീവിതം നല്ല രീതിയില്‍ ആസ്വദിക്കാനും കെല്പുള്ള, ആ പഴയ മനുഷ്യന്‍ ആക്കണമേ.

എല്ലാ വിശുദ്ധന്മാരും, മറ്റുള്ളവരുടെ പ്രാര്‍ത്ഥനകള്‍ എത്തിക്കാതെ, അങ്ങ് തന്ന പ്രാര്‍ത്ഥനയും, പിന്നെ അവരവരുടെ സ്വന്തം പ്രാര്‍ത്ഥനയും എത്തിച്ചു എന്ന പരമാര്‍ത്ഥത്തില്‍ നിന്നും ഊര്‍ജം ഉള്കൊണ്ടുകൊണ്ട്, ഈ വരികള്‍, ഈ എളിയ ദാസന്‍ ഇവിടെ കുറിച്ചിടുന്നു. അത് ഒരു പാപിയുടെ യാചന ആയി പരിഗനിക്കണമേ. ലോകത്തിലെ ഒരു ശക്തിക്കും എന്നെ അങ്ങയുടെ പാതയില്‍ നിന്നും വ്യതിചലിപ്പിക്കാന്‍ സാധിക്കരുതെ. ദൈവമേ എന്നെ മുറുകെ പിടിക്കണമേ.....

Chavittu Nadakam is believed to be originated after the arrival of Portuguese to the Kerala shores. The reason behind this assumption is that Chavittu Nadakam has a significant European Character in its costumes and outfits. But there are historical evidences that Kerala had connections with the western world well before the arrival of Portuguese. Even though some argue that the Chavittu Nadakam is created by Portuguese as they felt cultural emptiness when they arrived at Kerala, there are no evidences supporting this view. Also the fact that Chavittu Nadakam uses Tamil language for its playback songs and dialog, suggest that the art form is indigenous in origin.

Chavittu Nadakam is usually performed on open stages. Sometimes the interior of a church is also a venue. The performers wear glittering European costumes. Training is provided to performers before staging the play. The master is known as Annavi. The whole play is performed through musicals. Dance and instrumental music are combined in this art form. The bell and drum are two instruments used as background score. The actor themselves sing and act. Though it used to be an open stage performance, in the recent times this is mostly played indoor. The predominant feature of this art is the artists stamping / pounding (Chavittu) the dance floor producing resonant sounds to accentuate the dramatic situations. The actors sing their lines loudly and with exaggerated gestures stamp with great force on the wooden stage. Hence literally Chavittu Nadakam means 'Stamping Drama'. Great stress is laid on the step, which goes in harmony with the songs. In these art forms there is a great importance for dance and art. Foot stamping dance, fighting and fencing are the essential part of Chavittunadakam. Royal dresses and ornamental costumes are necessary.

The play is considered a success if at the end, the stage cave into the pressure of heavy stamping.

God is present in the Oncology Ward where I work. Patients arrive for their treatment, tired and apprehensive. They are newly vulnerable, and their expensively acquired market skills are gone for now. Yet their eyes fill with tentative hope of the beginning of healing. This is a different place to any they have known.

With the help of a caring staff, they learn to relax in the presence of their fellow patients. They remove wigs, hairpieces and jewellery, and expose poor hurting bodies. For the time they are here, they allow themselves simply to be who they are. As the medicine enters their bodies, the feelings of trust, hope and love are tangible all around. No market place here – simply pure and humble dependence - on God, on science, on the loving kindness of others.

The trappings of the commercial world do not help when we are at our most vulnerable. We need not dress our poverty in the ways of the world. We can trust, simply trust that in the Oncology Ward we are in our Father’s house. There we are welcomed simply as we are. There we are in the hands of good people, escorts of healing and grace, whom God has sent to us. It is all right to be poor.
